Gift from the artist, Von Allen, Salt Lake City, Utah
Coast evolved from a series of large arrow-shaped wall pieces created by the artist as she discovered new sensory and aesthetic experiences provided by the use of Utah clay. According to the artist, "From upward pointing arrows came shapes that bent this way and that. . . A rhythmic, almost brutal brushwork, emphasizes the upward movement of the form and gives it life. The glazes on these pieces are calculated to give a dry rich surface that, although, not shiny, still allows for some flashing. . . ." The process and physicality of building each work is both satisfying and frustrating to the artist. Working large means that it takes a long time to see ideas realized. Building in one piece, Allen creates a work from the bottom up over a period of several weeks. She must think out her forms in advance, since the lower half of the piece has usually dried to a leather-like hardness before she begins working on its upper sections. As the piece grows, it reaches and evolves becoming more organic with twists and spirals gradually dominating the form as it becomes more complex.
